The Club was founded in 1890 by officers of the Welsh regiments, with the aim to "honourably uphold the reputation of Wales in the Metropolis". The team was soon to be nicknamed "Preston North End" because "they were never beaten". This was due in part to having 6 Welsh internationals playing for the team. Notable fixtures at the time were a 1:0 defeat and 1:1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in 1894. At this time the Club had 90 members who were exclusively Welsh.
On the 18th October 2005 the club celebrated the 114th anniversary of the clubs first competitive game. We now have three teams who play in the Amateur Football Combination League and have about 60 members - a number of which are Welsh or at least have an affiliation to Wales one way or another!
The Club has its ups and downs and no longer commands the gate fee of 4d as it did in 1935. However, we are based in West London and anyone can join the Club and are encouraged to contact us via the "Contact Us" page on this website if they are interested in joining the London Welsh Club!
